Considering Abortion?

An unexpected pregnancy can leave you feeling uncertain, overwhelmed, or unsure about what to do next. If abortion is one of the options you’re thinking about, gathering accurate information is an essential first step in protecting your health and making an educated decision.

At The Haven, we do not provide or refer for abortion services. We do offer free and confidential pregnancy confirmation services, limited OB ultrasounds, and options consultations so you can understand your situation and explore your choices in a safe environment.

Understanding Abortion

Abortion is a procedure that ends a pregnancy. The two main types are medical and surgical, and each comes with its own process, side effects, and potential risks.

Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

This method typically uses two drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks a hormone called progesterone, which is needed to maintain a pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and empty. Medical abortion is FDA-approved for use through 10 weeks of pregnancy only.

Cramping and bleeding will occur during the process. Additional side effects can include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache

Potential risks include:

  • Digestive symptoms
  • Fever
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (when some pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus, potentially requiring surgical treatment)
  • Infection

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is performed at a clinic or hospital. The process can vary based on how far along the woman is in her pregnancy and may involve suction, surgical instruments, or a combination of both.

Typical side effects include cramping and spotting or light bleeding.

Potential risks include:

  • Perforation of the uterus (if a surgical tool pokes a hole)
  • Injury to the cervix
  • Scar tissue formation in the uterus (which may impact fertility or cause painful periods)
  • Infections

Why Pregnancy Confirmation Is Essential

Before making any decision, it’s essential to know:

  • How far along you are.
  • Whether the pregnancy is viable (has a heartbeat and is progressing).
  • If the pregnancy is located in the uterus.

A limited OB ultrasound at The Haven can provide these details.
